The clocks are going back on the 30th, so remember to make the most of that extra hour in bed. But while the days are getting shorter, the dark nights longer, house crime across the UK suddenly spikes.
On average, burglars are taking around £2,500 worth of items from each of the 650,000+ recorded break-ins each year in the UK. Unfortunately, while the average burglar takes only 10 minutes to break into your home, the average UK Police response is 2 minutes slower and only 10% of criminals being convicted. With less than 30% of UK homes having any form of home security system and crime at a record high, we’re on a mission to help you feel safe at home.
Fear not, even though the statistics are horrifying, protecting your home this Halloween doesn’t have to be scary. Our team has pulled together some simple tips that will help you feel safer and won’t cost the earth!
Tip one – Use light timers.
Farmers have used scarecrows for centuries to give the impression that a living person is watching over their crops, and light timers work in the same way. Smart lighting such as Philips Hue, or Hive lights, let you control your lights no matter where you are in the world. An occupied home is a less attractive target for opportunist criminals, but make sure you opt for energy efficient bulbs if you’re planning to use smart plugs to turn on lamps.
Tip two – Bin your packaging.
As it gets closer to Christmas and with the Black Friday sales just around the corner you’re increasingly more likely to have packaging for expensive electrical and beauty items that you’ll be recycling. We’d highly recommend that you break these down and pack them into your recycling bin rather than place them next to it. This simple tip only takes a few minutes, is free, and could save you the heartache of losing that iPad or Laptop you’ve been asking for all year.
Tip three – Keep your garden tidy.
It may sound like something your mother would say, but mothers have a way of being right, and this is no exception. By pruning back overgrown hedges, trees and vines you’re reducing the number of hiding places for would-be thieves.
Who said home security has to cost the earth? This will only cost your time, and it has the added benefit of making your house look nice!
Tip four – Don’t tell the world you’re away.
If you’re away, announcing it on social media could let criminals know that your home is empty and unprotected. We recommend that you enjoy your winter sun and leave the selfie posting until you get home, but if you’re a social butterfly and can’t help yourself please remember to update your privacy settings on Facebook and Instagram so that only the friends you trust can see what you’re posting.
Tip five – Get yourself a Cocoon.
For only £159, you could have a security system protecting your home when you can’t be there. Cocoon’s unique multi-room protection feature is powered by Subsound® technology, a powerful AI system that learns about your home to more accurately monitor it. Cocoon detects unwanted intruders by the sounds they make and notifying you instantly if anything unusual happens when you’re not home.
